Questions
Frequently asked
What makes a standing desk 'non-toxic'?
There is no legal definition, so we treat it as three things you can verify: a low-emission certification (GREENGUARD Gold is the strict tier), a composite-wood top that meets CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI formaldehyde limits, and honest disclosure of the top and finish materials. See how to buy a genuinely low-emission desk.
What is the difference between GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold?
Both certify low chemical emissions, but GREENGUARD Gold uses stricter limits and includes additional VOCs, and is the tier specified for schools and healthcare. For a workstation you sit at all day, Gold is the one worth looking for. Full explanation: GREENGUARD explained.
How do I verify a desk is actually certified?
Look the model up in the certifying body's own registry, not on the product page. For GREENGUARD, that is UL's SPOT database (spot.ul.com). If a claimed certificate is not registered, treat the claim as unverified. We do this for every model on the certification matrix.
Do standing desks help with back pain?
For many people, alternating between sitting and standing reduces lower-back discomfort more than sitting all day — but standing all day can cause its own problems, and a desk is not a cure for a medical condition. We cover the actual evidence, cited to recognized authorities, in does a standing desk help back pain.
How long should I stand at a standing desk each day?
A common evidence-informed target is alternating roughly every 30–60 minutes and building up to a couple of hours of standing spread across the day — not standing rigidly for eight hours. See how long to stand per day.
What height should my standing desk be?
Roughly elbow height when standing with relaxed shoulders and forearms parallel to the floor, with the monitor top near eye level. Our height calculator gives you a starting number for your stature.
Does furniture really contain formaldehyde?
Composite woods (MDF, particleboard) can off-gas formaldehyde from the adhesives that bind them, which is why CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI set emission limits. Solid wood and certified low-emission composites are the low-risk options. Details: formaldehyde in desks.
Are anti-fatigue mats worth it?
For most people who stand at a desk, yes — a good mat reduces foot and lower-back fatigue by encouraging small postural movements. What matters is foam density and the edge bevel, not the branding. See the best anti-fatigue mats.
What is BIFMA and why does it matter for a desk?
BIFMA is the trade body whose ANSI/BIFMA standards define durability, stability and safety tests for office furniture. A height-adjustable desk meeting the relevant BIFMA standard has been tested to hold its rated load and cycle its mechanism safely. See BIFMA explained.
Electric or manual (crank) standing desk — which is better?
Electric desks are far more likely to actually be adjusted (a one-button change versus 30 crank turns), which is the entire health benefit, so we recommend electric for daily sit-stand use. Manual desks make sense only on a tight budget or where power isn't available.
Can Riser & Rail's prices be trusted?
Prices are pulled live from Amazon's API and stamped with the date checked. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number is removed rather than shown stale. Amazon's price at checkout is always the one that counts.
Do you test the products yourself?
No — we do not run a testing lab and we never claim to. We verify certifications at the registry, compile specs from manufacturer manuals, do the cost-to-own math, and cite health claims to recognized authorities. Full method: our methodology.
Why do you sometimes recommend a desk you don't sell on Amazon?
Because we rank for the buyer, not the commission. The most certified desks — like the Uplift V2 and Fully Jarvis — are frequently direct-only and pay us nothing, and we still put them first when the certificate is what this buyer cares about.
How do you make money?
Through the Amazon Associates program: we earn a small commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes a ranking. See our affiliate disclosure.
Is a standing desk converter as good as a full standing desk?
A converter sits on your existing desk and is cheaper and renter-friendly, but it takes up desk depth, has a smaller work surface and can be less stable at height. For a permanent setup a full electric desk is better; a converter is the right call when you can't replace the desk.
How often do you update your rankings?
Prices update continuously; roundups and the certification matrix are reviewed quarterly; and health guides every six months. Every page shows a last-updated date, and we correct verified errors within 48 hours — tell us if you spot one.
