What Is Ergonomics?
Fitting the work to the person, rather than expecting the person to adapt to the work. Everything else is a consequence of that one idea.
Ergonomics is the practice of fitting a job, a tool or a workspace to the person using it, instead of asking the person to adapt to it. At a desk, that means the chair, the desk height, the screen and the keyboard are adjusted around your body — and it means changing position regularly, because no single posture is good for eight hours.
The definition, and why the direction matters
The word comes from the Greek ergon (work) and nomos (laws) — the study of the rules of work. In practice, occupational-safety bodies describe it as designing or arranging workplaces, products and systems so they fit the people who use them. The direction of fitting is the whole point: the tool adapts, not the person.
That framing has a practical consequence. If your wrists hurt at your desk, ergonomics does not ask you to type differently through willpower. It asks what about the keyboard height, the chair, or the desk is forcing that posture — and then it changes that thing.
The four risk factors at a desk
Occupational-health guidance on musculoskeletal disorders keeps returning to the same short list. For office work the ones that matter are:
- Awkward posture. Joints held away from neutral — wrists extended upward, shoulders shrugged, neck bent forward toward a low screen. The further from neutral and the longer it is held, the more it costs you.
- Static loading. Holding any position without moving. This is the one people miss, and it is why standing all day is not the answer to sitting all day — the problem is the stillness, not the posture.
- Repetition. Thousands of small identical movements. Typing and mousing are exactly this, which is why small changes in hand position compound over a working year.
- Contact stress. A hard desk edge pressing into your forearm, or a chair edge into the back of your thigh. Local pressure on soft tissue, sustained for hours.
Notice that none of them is about a single dramatic event. Office ergonomics is a dose problem: small loads, held or repeated, for long periods.
What ergonomics is not
- Not a product category.A chair labeled "ergonomic" is not ergonomic for you unless it adjusts to fit you. The word on the box is marketing; the fit is the thing.
- Not one perfect posture. There is no single correct way to sit that you should hold all day. The best posture is genuinely the next one.
- Not medical treatment. Ergonomics reduces the load that contributes to discomfort. It does not diagnose or treat an injury, and persistent pain belongs with a clinician.
- Not expensive by definition. The three highest-value changes at most desks — screen height, keyboard height and moving more often — cost nothing or nearly nothing.
How to apply it to your desk in twenty minutes
Work from the body outward. This order matters, because each step changes the next.
- Chair first. Feet flat, thighs roughly parallel to the floor, two or three fingers of clearance behind the knee, lower back supported. If your feet do not reach, use a footrest rather than raising the chair.
- Desk to your elbows. Forearms parallel to the floor with relaxed shoulders. If the desk will not go low enough, a keyboard tray does it instead.
- Screen to your eyes.Top of the screen at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away. This usually needs a monitor arm or a stand.
- Keyboard and mouse at the same height, close in.Wrists straight, elbows near your sides. Fold away the keyboard's flip-out feet — they tilt it the wrong way.
- Then move. Change posture regularly. This is the step that outperforms all the equipment.

Where a standing desk fits into this
A sit-stand desk is not ergonomic on its own — a desk at the wrong height is at the wrong height whether it moves or not. What it is, is the most practical tool for defeating static loading, because it makes changing position cheap enough that you actually do it. Where materials come into it
Classical ergonomics is about posture and load. This site adds a second axis, because a workstation is also an object in a small room you breathe in for eight hours a day: what the desk, the chair and the mat are made of, and whether anyone has verified it.
