How Long Should You Stand at a Standing Desk?

The goal isn't maximum standing — it's alternating. Here's a sensible sit-stand ratio and how to build up to it without overdoing it.

By Stephen V.Updated How we research

Aim to alternate rather than to maximize standing. A common, sensible starting point is switching every 30–60 minutes and building toward a couple of hours of standing spread across the day — not standing continuously for eight hours, which causes its own fatigue.

Why the ratio, not the total, is the point

The health benefit of a standing desk is breaking up prolonged sitting, and that comes from the switching. Standing rigidly for hours simply trades seated strain for standing strain — lower back, legs and feet. So the useful metric is a sit-stand rhythm, not a standing high score.

A sensible starting rhythm

WeekRough pattern
Getting startedStand 10–15 min per hour; sit the rest. Stop before you ache.
Building upStand 20–30 min per hour; alternate through the day.
SettledRoughly balance sitting and standing (about 1:1 to 2:1 sit:stand), switching every 30–60 minutes.

Listen to your body over any fixed number — if standing starts to hurt, sit down. The right amount is the one you can sustain comfortably while sitting less than you used to.

What makes standing sustainable

  • An anti-fatigue mat so your feet and lower back aren't taking the whole load.
  • The right desk height so you're not hunching or shrugging.
  • A genuinely supportive chair for the sitting half — because you should still be sitting a fair amount.
  • Movement, not just standing — a short walk beats standing still.

The bigger picture

Standing more is a way to sit less, not a replacement for activity. It complements the general advice to move throughout the day. For the fuller comparison, see standing desk vs sitting.

Not medical advice

This page is general information, not medical advice, and does not replace a clinician. If you have persistent or severe pain — or a specific condition like a herniated disc or sciatica — talk to a doctor or physical therapist before changing how you work.

Questions

Frequently asked

How long should you stand at a standing desk per day?
Alternate rather than aim for a maximum. A common starting point is switching every 30–60 minutes and building toward a couple of hours of standing spread across the day, not standing continuously.
Is it bad to stand at a desk all day?
Yes — prolonged static standing causes its own back, leg and foot fatigue. The goal is alternating; see standing vs sitting.
What is a good sit-stand ratio?
Roughly 1:1 to 2:1 sitting to standing once you've built up, switching every 30–60 minutes — but adjust to what you can sustain comfortably.
