Standing Desk Won't Go Up: A Diagnostic Guide
Nine times out of ten it is the reset procedure, an overload cut-out or a loose cable — not a failed motor. Work through these in order before you contact anyone.
Before you assume a motor has died: clear the desk, look for an obstruction, reseat the cables, power cycle it for a full minute, and run the reset procedure. That sequence solves the large majority of standing desks that stop lifting, and all of it is free. The steps above are the procedure. The sections below explain what each symptom usually means, so you can skip to the relevant one.
Match the symptom to the cause
- Lifts a few inches, stops, drops back slightly. Overload protection or anti-collision. Clear the desk and check the travel path — this is step one and two, and it is the most common single cause.
- Goes down but not up. Almost always overload or a load-sensing fault, because lifting is the direction that requires work. Clear everything and retry before suspecting the motor.
- Beeps and shows an error code. Look the code up in the manual — most are a reset request, an overload flag or a motor-communication error, and they map directly to the steps above.
- One leg is higher than the other. The legs have lost sync. The reset procedure re-syncs them; if it does not, the brackets on the high leg need loosening and re-settling.
- Handset is completely dark. Power supply, handset cable or control box. Check the outlet with something else before anything more elaborate.
- Presets no longer work but manual travel does. Purely a memory problem — run the reset and re-record the presets.
Why the reset procedure exists
An electric standing desk does not know where it is. It counts motor rotations from a learned lowest position, and if that reference drifts — from a power interruption, a partial obstruction, or one leg moving slightly further than the other over hundreds of cycles — the control box loses confidence and stops cooperating.
The reset drives the desk to its physical bottom stop and tells it "this is zero". That is why the procedure always involves holding DOWN, and why the desk dips slightly at the end. It is not a fault code being cleared; it is a measurement being retaken. Understanding that makes the procedure much easier to remember, and it explains why it fixes crooked legs, dead presets and refusal to lift with the same action.
Prevention
- Respect the rated load, and remember the top counts.Capacity figures include the desktop itself, and most published ratings are the manufacturer's own rather than independently tested — one of the reasons our frames roundup treats them as ceilings to stay under.
- Sort the cables. A cable pulled tight at full height is the most common self-inflicted obstruction, and it is entirely preventable — our cable management guide is written around exactly this failure.
- Leave clearance above and below. A shelf, a window sill, a drawer unit or a bin under the desk will all stop travel.

When it is genuinely broken
If cable-swapping isolates a dead motor or a dead control box, that is a warranty conversation. Have the model number, the purchase date and the symptom description ready, and say which component you isolated and how — support queues move considerably faster for someone who has already done the diagnosis.
Two notes for the longer term. First, this is the failure mode a manual crank desk simply does not have, which is a real argument in our electric versus manual comparison. Second, control boxes and handsets are frequently available as spare parts for the established brands and rarely available for the marketplace ones — worth knowing before you buy, not after.
